Glossary of terms

Job Production
A method of manufacturing where a single product is produced to meet the specific requirements of an individual customer. Each item is unique, and the process is usually labor-intensive.
Example: Custom-made furniture, tailored clothing, bespoke jewelry. -
Batch Production
A manufacturing process where goods are produced in groups (or batches) instead of a continuous stream. Once one batch is completed, the next batch with possibly different specifications can begin.
Example: Baked goods, pharmaceuticals, clothing. -
Flow Production (Mass/Continuous Production)
A method where products are manufactured in a continuous stream through an assembly line. It is used for high-volume, standardized products with little variation. This process is highly automated and efficient.
Example: Automobiles, bottled beverages, household appliances. -
Cellular Production
A production method where workstations, or "cells," are arranged to focus on a specific part of a product or the entire product. Each cell handles a sequence of operations, allowing for more flexibility and customization than traditional mass production.
Example: Customized bicycles, automobile components, medical devices. -
Customization
The process of tailoring a product to meet specific customer preferences or requirements. This is common in job production and cellular production. -
Assembly Line
A manufacturing process in which a product is assembled in stages as it moves through a line. Typically associated with flow production. -
Batch Size
The quantity of products produced in a single batch during batch production. -
Workstation (Cell)
A designated area or group of workers focused on specific tasks or parts of production in cellular manufacturing. -
Economies of Scale
Cost advantages that businesses achieve due to increased production, where the cost per unit decreases as output increases. This is often a key feature of flow production. -
Lead Time
The total time it takes to manufacture a product from start to finish, often varying depending on the method of production used. -
Production Efficiency
A measure of how well resources (time, labor, materials) are used to produce goo
